Course Number: Art 467
Course Name: Video Art
vTransmission
Proposals Due: September 21
Due: October 12
Objective:
To explore innovative and artistic ways that the internet can be used for transmitting video. A large variety of video broadcasting technologies (geotagging video, signal compression, nonlinear narrative, YouTube annotations, HTML5, VOIP, viral media, etc.) will be presented and discussed.
Assignment:
1. Consider the large variety of ways that video is integrated into networked technology. We will discuss a few options in class, you will be given readings on the subject, and there are some examples at the bottom of this page.
2. Conceive of a Video Art project that can take advantage of this technology and presents a unique viewing experience for your work. You should specifically consider the various meanings that might be implied by the medium. Ask yourself, what is unique about viewing video on the web? How is networked video different than tape, DVD, television, and movie theatres? How is the technology, audience, and interface different for "Web Cinema"?
Some topics to consider: democracy, dissolution of borders, globalization, viewer feedback, games, tutorials, confession, tags, tool for social change, privacy, documentary, The Cult of the Amateur, etc.
3. Write a brief proposal for your project, and be prepared to present it to the class on September 21st. Include in your proposal your subject and goals for the piece. Use storyboards or schematics as necessary.
4. Familiarize yourself with the technology. There are numerous ways that you can integrate video into the internet. If you don't have a YouTube or Vimeo account, get one and upload a video.
5. Before class on October 12 please hand in your assignment by emailing me a link to the webpage where you would like for the class to begin viewing your work.
Documentation:
You will be required to turn in a 200-500 word statement about your project. This statement should include a description of your process, concept, and intention.
