Course Name: Audio Art
Synaesthetic Sound (Foley Art) due Oct. 27
From Wikipedia: "Synaesthesia is a neurologically based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway."
Synaesthesia is a term commonly used in the time-based media arts to describe a relationship between a variety of media. For instance, a particular sound may be associated with a particular motion or a certain color may associated with a text. It is common for Motion Graphics professionals to use synaesthetic qualities in their work.
Objective:
Through using listening skills you will explore associations of visual movement with sound. Successful completion of this project should improve your sound and visual editing skills. You will be encouraged to creatively experiment with both sounds and visuals in order to develop new ideas about their integration.
Assignment:
1. Using sound from your Musique Concrete' assignment (or other sounds approved by your instructor) create visual accompaniment to your sounds. Note: you can re-edit your sounds as necessary. Also, consider using the original sounds across multiple tracks; mixing them upon export.
2. You may use any digital video editing tool for this assignment (Flash, Premiere, After Effects). Examples for using this software will be demonstrated in class.
3. Your final video should be 2-3 minutes in length.
4. Output/export your final video using Quicktime (.mov) with H-264 compression. Your video should be 640x480, square pixel, 30 fps with an audio track that is 44.1kHz, stereo. You will turn this in on a CD/DVD.
Assessment:
You will be graded on your ability to creatively associate imagery (abstract or realistic) with sound. Consider using text, color, image, shape, animation, looping, etc. Listening is an important component of this project.
Documentation:
The process used to create each sound/visual must be documented in detail. Explain your reasons for the placement of sound/visuals into the animation. Keeping a log while working is recommended. This documentation is required when handing the assignment in. It should be in sentence form, using terminology explained during lectures.
