Vodcast Vol. 8 Luciano Chessa - November 2009
Composer and musicologist Luciano Chessa discusses his research into the work of Futurist Luigi Russolo. Luciano also discusses a commission he received from Performa, SFMOMA, and EMPAC to rebuild and perform Russolo's Intonarumori. I spoke with Luciano during the summer of 2009 in a woodshop at RPI where he was working on building the Intonarumori. More of Luciano's work can be found here: http://www.myspace.com/lucianochessa You can also see a brief video of Luciano testing one of his Intonarumori here: http://vimeo.com/7527035

Predictions - September 2009
Finally PUBLISHED!!! Edited by Cara Benson, with contributors Paul Raskin, Bart Bridger Woodstrup, Julie Sadler, David Zuga, Jason Zuga, and Monica de la Torre. As is painfully obvious for many a religious leader and many a psychic, predicting the future is an indeterminate business. The work collected in PREDICTIONS takes that indeterminancy as a starting point and celebrates it. A futurist points to how the question of the future, once a matter for dreamers and philosophers, has moved to the center of development and scientific agendas. Several artists, well aware that accelerating changes to the environment require that we learn quickly, suggest how art might help us to understand and to rethink the interface between old technologies and new technologies in this time of environmental crisis. A writer and a scientist team up to tell an alternate story of evolution. And a poet writes, "Predictions acquire full meaning when they apply to the, until then, unimaginable." Animalia (Trailer) - Coming in 2010
Those of you in the Albany-NYC area are probably familiar with C. Ryder Cooley's emotional, mythical, and animistic performances. I've had the good fortune to work with Ryder this summer to help bring her drawings to life through animation. There will be a trailer posted on vodstrup.com in the coming days, but unfortunately the full-length animation will not hit the screens until 2010. I'm very excited about this project, it is looking quite good!
![]() Northern Illinois University I recently rejoined the Time Arts department at Northern Illinois University. The goal this semester is to introduce my students to Live Cinema and possibly start some live coding. The school also just purchased a rapid prototyping machine, so I plan to dust off an old 3D laser scanner and experiment with replication. I'm still settling in here, but I plan to stir things up soon, keep posted! ![]() Vodcast Vol. 7 Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg For the seventh podcast in my series, I had a chance to interview a good friend of mine, Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg. We discuss a very unique and traditional form of music called Sacred Harp. From his Bio: "Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg is a sound artist, composer, and shape note singer whose work explores the intersections of technology and tradition. His work delves into personal narrative and the rootedness of history in geology and place. His output encompasses installation, music for live performance, tunebooks, web design, audio tours, and transmission arts. His current work investigates the history and practice of Sacred Harp singing and the geological, social, technological, and religious history of upstate New York. For more information you should visit http://www.silversand.org and http://www.fasola.org" ![]() Disposable Rocket Band For fun this summer, I became an official Disposable Rocket for two local dates. Hopefully, we'll make another journey together soon. June 5, Jason's Upstairs Bar, Hudson, NY w/ Dead Unicorn About Disposable Rocket Band: "The story of the Disposable Rocket Band is as old as rock n roll itself -- charismatic frontman travels to other dimension through freak particle collider accident, is enslaved by a panda-like race of amazon aliens, serenades them by day while performing sexual favors for them at night, crafts a make-shift rocket ship with the help of his robots DR-770 and EA MK II and escapes to Albany NY where ever since he's been playing the music he absorbed at the Bearly Legal Bordello." ![]() Sound in the Frying Pan Gathering Lore is an installation that visualizes and sonifies Sound in the Frying Pan is an installation of five site-specific compositions by emerging sound artists aboard the lightship Frying Pan. Jessica Feldman, Ben Owen, Melissa Clark, Shimpei Takeda, Suzanne Thorpe, Philip White, Bart Bridger Woodstrup, and Richard Garet will expand our aural senses as they evoke sonic spectres and create alternative realities throughout the multiple levels of the historic vessel. Curated by Suzanne Thorpe and brought to you by the Electronic Music Foundation. Smashing at ReArting Troy Projected onto a pillar in the Atrium of downtown Troy, Smashing was exhibited as a part of "ReArting Troy" - a public art initiative to bring art into Troy for the 2009 summer.
Statement: ![]() For Another Nature This piece of music was inspired by the artwork included in "Other Nature: An abstract reflection on photography and the physical world." I attempted to work in a similar process as the visual artists in Other Nature; my goal was to create an abstract sound environment from the sonic images I collected from Peebles Island State Park (in Waterford, NY at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers). All of the sounds (except for the vocalist) were recorded on March 9, 2009 at Peebles Island and then resynthesized using custom digital audio software. Megan Hyravy (Klebbe) is a Chicago-based opera singer and it is her voice that has been re-synthesized into many of the bird-like sounds heard throughout the piece. The work is being exhibited at Carrie Haddad Photographs in Hudson, NY through April 19th. Listen to it here: Vodcast Vol. 9 photo credit: Johannes Courtens ![]() Vodcast Vol. 6 Inter-Species Duets with David Rothenberg Yet another installment of my Vodcast podcast series. This time I have a candid conversation about Why Birds Sing and Thousand Mile Song with author David Rothenberg. ![]() Time Out by Kathy High at Exit Art “Petition for Lab Rat Shelter” Over the past week I helped Kathy High design and build a plexiglas rat maze for an upcoming bio-art exhibit at Exit Art: Corpus Extremus (LIFE+) February 28 – April 18, 2009
From the exhibit documentation: "For Exit Art, High designed pieces that are for future enrichment of the rats' lab environments, and also recognizing these non-human collaborators as the invisible heroes of science. Transgenic lab rats and science technicians work side-by-side in sterile laboratories. High has designed playful prototypes for the technicians and rats, with an exploratory time out maze designed to strengthen cognitive abilities, and also a space where lab technicians and rats may interact skin-to-skin, using the sense of touch to encourage health." ![]() Digital Rituals at Republic Alex Chechile and I performed at Republic's inaugural exhibition "Digital Rituals." Alex generated multiple channels of warm, analog and digital sound synthesis, while I supplied synchronous graphics, projected onto the performance space. Merce Cunningham Dance Studio Continuing my collaboration with the Clyde Forth Visual Theatre, I practiced with them at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio in NYC. Our efforts culminate with shows at the Cunningham Studios on September 11 and 12, 2009. With the inclusion of two new dancers and a slew of new visual effects, this show keeps getting better and better. ![]() Songs For Presidents I was invited by my friend Jefferson Pitcher to provide visual support for "Songs for Presidents: A Bands for Lands Benefit" - celebrating the Presidential inauguration with performances from the critically acclaimed album "Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs for 43 U.S. Presidencies."
